A Study in Wood & Light

KID Amsterdam
Frederik Hendrikplantsoen · Amsterdam

KID is one of those places you can easily pass by without giving it a second thought. Located on Frederik Hendrikplantsoen in Amsterdam-West, its exterior doesn't quite prepare you for what is waiting inside. Step through the door and the atmosphere changes immediately: a warm, open space with a generous ceiling, plenty of natural light and an energy that feels both relaxed and considered.

Everything appears carefully thought through, yet nothing feels overly designed. The result is modern, informal and effortlessly cool the kind of interior that doesn't need to announce itself.

The space

Dark timber is the dominant language of the interior, giving the place an immediate sense of warmth. It runs through the space almost continuously, creating a strong visual identity while providing a backdrop for the lighter elements around it.

Large windows bring daylight deep into the restaurant, while the glass-block details add another layer to the architecture. Instead of simply dividing the space, they catch and diffuse the light, creating subtle changes throughout the day.

There is a very interesting contrast between the materials. Warm wood sits alongside stainless steel, glass, leather and contemporary lighting. The combination feels almost like a bachelor's apartment, but so well thought out that it comes across contemporary rather than cold.

Two bar areas give the restaurant different points of energy, while the open layout keeps everything connected. You can sit at the bar, settle into one of the dining areas or find yourself in a darker corner where the atmosphere feels more intimate.

The furniture follows the same philosophy as the architecture: understated, comfortable and functional, but clearly chosen with care.

At the Table

The food follows a similarly eclectic approach. KID's kitchen combines Asian influences with flavours from the Middle East and the Caribbean, creating a menu that doesn't fit neatly into one category.

Both lunch and dinner are spectacular, with generous, playful dishes made for sharing and plenty of interesting combinations of flavour and texture. But KID is not only about the food. The coffee is excellent, making it just as appealing for a daytime visit, while the oolong iced tea quickly became our favourite refreshing, fragrant and the perfect match for the food.

Whether you come for lunch, stay for dinner or simply stop by for a coffee, KID manages to make each part of the experience feel equally considered.

Worth Looking Twice

We left KID with the feeling that there was still more to discover. It is not a place that tries to impress you all at once; instead, the details slowly reveal themselves.

What impressed us most is how naturally everything comes together. KID feels confident without being pretentious, considered without feeling polished to the point of losing its character.
